Traffic island

If there is a lot of traffic on the road, the road will have at least 2-3 lanes to accommodate this additional traffic flow.  In such a case, the road is divided into 2 sections with a traffic island in between.

The road is usually too broad to allow the pedestrian to cross it at a stretch. Instead , he or she will cross midway and halt for some time at the traffic island , before crossing the remainder of the road.
